Rob Bell Discusses How to Read Violent Old Testament Stories

The release of Rob Bell’s newest book What Is the Bible? is approaching, and the writer and pastor has released several trailers discussing the premise of his latest work.

In the first trailer, Bell light-heartedly discusses a very basic overview of what the book is about, adding that he believes that religion has hijacked the Bible and that it needs to be viewed differently than many currently see it.

But in a follow-up trailer, the conversation gets a little heavier, and explains his thoughts on how to understand violent Old Testament stories like Noah and the flood.

He explains that the Noah story is different from many other ancient flood stories because it ends with God promising not to ever do that again.

He continues, “What is interesting is how many of those stories in the Bible that appear to be primitive and barbaric were actually a step forward. So, often times the passages that people dismiss as primitive and barbaric were actually enlightened and progressive for their time.”

“You have to read the Bible in terms of evolution; in terms of expanding human consciousness.”

As with many of Bell’s works, the book will likely be controversial, but he continues to generate some interesting discussions about theology.
