The Academy of Motion Picture Arts has released this shortlist of 15 films that will be considered in the category of Best Documentary Feature when the list of Oscar nominations are announced on Jan. 26. Along with several films that examine political violence (The Square, Dirty Wars, The Act of Killing) and sports (The Armstrong Lie, The Crash Reel) the list also includes a couple of somewhat controversial films. Blackfish looks at the conditions that Seaworld’s killer whales are under in light of the death of a trainer. And in God Loves Uganda, filmmakers visit Uganda to examine anti-gay sentiment that has arisen following an evangelical revival led by several prominent Christian leaders from the United States …
