2012 was a great year to be Anne Hathaway. Her last movie, some sort of Batman thing, seemed to do all right at the box office. And now she’s got this weekend’s Les Miserables, basically the granddaddy of all musicals. In fact, just about her only misstep was a literal one, during which she accidentally flashed paparazzi at the Les Mis premiere. She went on the Today Show to discuss her new movie, and, of course, Matt Lauer went right for the important issues: asking about her wardrobe malfunction. Hathaway tried to brush away the incident, but after Lauer kept after her, she let loose with this devastating, articulate response:
Well, it was obviously an unfortunate incident. It kind of made me sad on two accounts. One was that I was very sad that we live in an age when someone takes a picture of another person in a vulnerable moment and rather than delete it, and do the decent thing, sells it. And I’m sorry that we live in a culture that commodifies sexuality of unwilling participants, which takes us back to Les Mis, because that’s what my character is.”
Boom. Drops the mic. Does a Catwoman-y backflip off the stage …
