Have We Forgotten About the Trinity?

If you look at the landscape of church culture there seems to be a growing movement of communities of faith who are known for emphasizing one aspect of the Trinity over the others. Though I think this has gone on for a very long time in church history, I am concerned with how comfortable we as pastors have become with telling only a part of the Story of who God is to our people.

More than anything it’s starting to feel like we’ve begun to play favorites.

Some churches seem to emphasize Jesus more than the Holy Spirit and the Father.
Some churches seem to emphasize the Father more than Jesus and the Holy Spirit.
Some churches seem to emphasize the Holy Spirit more than the Father and Jesus.

Without even realizing it, this emphasis and de-emphasis from many churches has begun to shape the theology of many of our people. Once a church begins to emphasize one aspect of who God is [for longer than just a season] then you actually begin to de-emphasize the other parts of who God is without even realizing it.

I’m just calling us to consider a stronger balance in our message to our church communities about the Trinity. The reason I feel this is important to name is because I wonder if some of us don’t realize it but we’re afraid of all of who God is. I wonder if we’re afraid to go down the road of really inviting our people to get to know the mysterious nature of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. I think some of our fear may be rooted in the fact that this journey might lead people to question what they’ve believed or even scarier what we have told them to believe.

Ultimately a church leadership who invites its people into complete relationship with God in three persons is not a safe and comfortable church to go to…this kind of church becomes unpredictable in a way. But I wonder if that is the very thing that has been missing.

How do you see this playing out in your church context?
