We Are All This Security Guard Openly Weeping at a Kendrick Lamar Show

Earlier this week, we at RELEVANT posted an article about the little things that are making us cry. That clip of Joni Mitchell singing “Both Sides Now” with Brandi Carlile. The Wakanda Forever teaser. The James Webb space telescope images. You name it. Everyone is just a little more in their feels these days, and that goes double for a security guard at Kendrick Lamar’s show in Houston.

A viral Tiktok captured Devyn Sanford on duty, keeping the peace, but also very clearly moved by Kendrick’s performance of “LOVE.”

Fortunately, Sanford has since identified himself and instead of getting defensive, fully owned up to where he was at. “This song means EVERYTHING to me and I was feeling everybody around me emotions,” he commented. “Definitely love getting paid to do this.”

In an interview with Fox 26, Sanford said he’s a big Lamar fan and looked forward to working the show, since it basically meant he’d get to collect a paycheck for a decent seat at the show. And of all of Kendrick’s many excellent songs, Sanford says “LOVE” is particularly meaningful to him.

“It brought me back to when the song first came out. I was going through a tumultuous time in my life at that point,” he said. “The words, the crowd around me, everyone was screaming and reaching for Kendrick and crying and I kind of like absorbed everybody’s emotions. I was trying my best to hold it together and I just cracked.”

No shame in that, Sanford. Lamar himself understands that music is moving. In an interview with “kid reporter” Jazlyn Guerra, Lamar explained that he appreciates that his music connects with fans on a deep, emotional level.

“It’s really just about the feeling of it, at the end of the day. Past all the politics. Past all the numbers. It’s what music makes you feel,” he said.

“Shoutout to [Sanford], by the way, because I seen bro, and I was like, ‘I wonder what he going through?’” Lamar continued. “But at the end of the day, that’s how you want everybody to receive your music. And make them feel good, make them feel like it’s a moment they attached to. It can live forever.”

After the post went viral, Sanford says Kendrick’s team hooked him up with some free merch. There’s a good reminder not to fight the feeling when you start getting moved. You never know what might come of just letting it out.
