Two Actors From Netflix’s Upcoming Show About an ‘American Jesus’ Have Died in an Accident

Raymundo Garduño Cruz and Juan Francisco González Aguilar, two actors from the Netflix series The Chosen One were killed and six other cast and crew members were injured in a car crash near Mulege on the Baja California Sur peninsula. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the van flipped after running off the road near an area the crew had been working at earlier in the day. The accident did not occur on set. Instead, the van was in transit from Santa Rosalía to the local airport

The Chosen One series is based on the comic book series from Mark Millar and Peter Gross that tells the story of a 12-year-old boy who “learns he’s the returned Jesus Christ, destined to save humankind.” The comic book was initially released in 2004 under the name Chosen before going on to be renamed American Jesus. The series also had follow-up collection called American Jesus: The New Messiah.

The Netflix adaptation began filming in April 2022, but following the accident production on the show has paused for the foreseeable future.

Local media reported the crash occurred on June 16, and said the van flipped after running off the road in a desert area. The crew had apparently been working in the nearby Santa Rosalia area at the time.

The Baja California Department of Culture confirmed the actors’ deaths. At the time of this writing, the six other injured and currently unnamed production members are all currently stable.

In a statement Monday, a Netflix spokesperson said, “We are deeply saddened by the tragic accident that took the lives of Ray Garduño and Juan Francisco González. Our thoughts are with their loved ones and with those injured during this unfortunate accident.”
