A mosque in Murfreesboro, Tenn is officially opening today after a very public two-year battle with local residents who repeatedly went to court in attempts to move the mosque somewhere else. Other methods of keeping the mosque at bay have included a large rally, vandalism, arson and a bomb threat. Several members of a local church recently put up a series of white crosses along the street that runs by the mosque. According to Middle Tennessee Baptist Church Member, Mack Richards, the crosses are meant to make a statement about their feelings about the mosque. “It was more or less to make a statement to the Muslims about how we felt about our religion, our Christianity. We wanted them to see the crosses and know how we felt about things” ... Discuss

 

A mosque in southwest Missouri was burned to the ground in the second blaze to be inflicted on it this month. Police searched the ashes for evidence of arson, while a small group of Muslims gathered for prayer. "Maybe there is something we are supposed to learn from this," said Imam Lahmuddin, the mosque leader. Jill Michel, the pastor of the local South Joplin Christian Church, has said that several churches have offered their buildings as space for the Islamic Society to gather in until they are able to rebuild. "I can't imagine driving up to my church and having it burned to the ground," Michel said. "I worry about what any of this sort of thing says about humanity" ... Discuss

I went to the mosque today near Covington Pike in North Memphis—home to a sea of car lots and inflatable characters and where the color orange is king. I don’t know what I was expecting the mosque to look like, but this was not it. I suppose I thought it would be ornate and tall, mysterious and smelling of cardamom. But when I arrived, it looked more like an oversized fellowship hall from my youth (complete with wood paneling and a kitchenette) than the mosques I’d seen on the Travel Channel. Read More
