Listen up you whippersnappers! Mean old New York Mayor Bloomberg is tired of you blasting your new-fangled iPod thingies with all your rock ‘n roll and rap music. That’s why City Hall is embarking on a campaign to get youngsters to turn down the volume knob on your earbud music gadgets. Even though the campaign is being financed by a grant from some super lame organization called the Fund for Public Health, to raise awareness about the dangers of something called “irreversible premature hearing loss” (whatever that is!), according to this story, many New Yorkers are telling old man Bloomberg to BUD out. Zing! Take that City Hall! What’s that? You don’t have a response? No seriously, we can’t hear you. Did you say something? … Discuss

 

On March 12, New York City’s war on soda will strike again. Currently, the city prohibits the sale of single-serving colas larger than 16 ounces, but starting in a few weeks, the law takes aim at pizza places. According to the totally rational legislation that makes complete sense, pizza delivery restaurants will no longer be allowed to deliver 2-liter bottles of soda with orders. (Six, 12-ounce cans? Well, that’s perfectly legal.) Also, sorry Chuck E. Cheese fans. Pitchers of soda will also be outlawed. Because, as anyone who has ever visited a Chuck E. Cheese knows, those 60-ounce pitchers are clearly designed for one individual child, and are never used as an economical way for families to provide beverages for all of the kids at the party. Mind you, this is the same city in which the Carnegie Deli, which is known for pastrami sandwiches larger than most small SUVs, is a world-famous landmark … Discuss

 

As temperatures on the East Coast continue to drop, a joint group of charity organizations in New York City is doing something to help the city’s homeless. The “Don’t Walk By” campaign, which is entering its fifth year, organizes volunteers to seek out New York City’s homeless population. The volunteers offer them blankets, clothes and food and invites them to residential recovery programs and shelters through local churches. The group’s organizers say their mission was inspired by Jesus’ parable of the Good Samaritan. The campaign runs through the month of February … Discuss
