‘Veronica Mars’ Campaign Backers Given Refunds Following Download Debacle

Fans of Kristin Bell’s detective series Veronica Mars enthusiastically raised a whopping $5.7 million through a Kickstarter campaign to see their hero again on the big screen, but many backers didn’t get the happy ending they were hoping for. Many of the campaign’s supporters went to Twitter to complain about difficulties being able to watch the film online—as promised on the Kickstarter page—through the Flixster and UltraViolet services. Meanwhile, pay-download services like Amazon and iTunes for non-Kickstarter viewers worked seamlessly. To their credit, Warner Bros., the film’s studio, acted relatively quickly to quell the social media controversy, offering backers refunds for part of their pledge or for the price of watching the film on another format. It’s not the first time a Kickstarter-funded movie has caught flack for not delivering on its backer benefits.
