In a new report from Variety, Sony Pictures has announced a slate of upcoming reboots and revivals to a few classic action franchises, including Bad Boys, 21 Jump Street, Charlie’s Angels and Men In Black. Here are all the details you need to know.
The Bad Boys reboot, which would become the third movie in the series, is currently titled Bad Boys For Life (dope). Will Smith has agreed to come back as the lead, and Martin Lawrence continues to circle the project as his partner on the force. Multiple writers have taken cracks at the script, and while no director is attached yet, Sony hopes the movie will release by January 2020.
The next Men In Black movie sees an overhaul of its two leads, however. While Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones have carried the franchise up to this point, the reboot will star Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson (Thor: Ragnarok) as the two alien-fighting agents.
Meanwhile, a new Charlie’s Angels movie is coming from Elizabeth Banks (she did Pitch Perfect 2 and starred in comedies like Wet Hot American Summer and The 40-Year-Old Virgin). The movie, currently filming. stars Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska. Banks has a track record of leaning into female empowerment in things like the Pitch Perfect franchise, so this iteration of Angels is for sure going to have a different vibe than past installments of the franchise.
Finally, the next 21 Jump Street movie will be a spin-off from the Channing Tatum/Jonah Hill movies of the past few years. Instead of those two leading men, the spin-off will feature a pair of female undercover cops going back to high school.
Reboots and revivals are all the rage these days, with flicks like Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Jurassic World making big money at the box office. As long as there’s demand, studios will keep making them. With talent like this involved, we’re onboard.
