Master Chief Comes Out Swinging in the First Full Trailer for ‘Halo’

Studios and gamers alike have been salivating over the prospect of a proper Halo adaptation pretty much since the game’s debut way back in 2001. Paramount+ wasn’t the most obvious platform for those dreams to finally come to life, but the streamer is doubling down on prestige scifi content and hoping that Halo will do for it what the source material did for Xbox.

So now we’ve got our first real look at the series. Like the game, it will follow our hero Master Chief (Pablo Schreiber of Orange is the New Black) on his mission to save humanity from an alien race known as the Covenant and their religious obsession with Halo, which will either save their species or possibly doom the universe to a race of extraterrestrial parasites. It’s so hard to tell with these things.

The trailer features several characters that will be familiar to Halo heads (Master Chief and his AI pal Cortana), an actor familiar to anyone who likes good cinema (Bokeem Woodbine) and — about 45 seconds in — what sure looks like a 2001 Chevy Tahoe. Unclear what one of those would be doing on an alien planet 500 years from now but good on Chevy for what appears to be a very reliable vehicle.

The game’s real infamy lives in the LAN parties, which fueled many a Code Red Mountain Dew-soaked guys’ night (and not a few youth group parties). The show can’t really touch that level of interactive fervor, but it can reach into the series’ deep well of lore, which can propel several seasons’ worth of intergalactic drama. If it’s good, that is. We’ll see.
