“You Never Need Nobody”
There are a lot of reasons to love the Lone Bellow, but one of the best reasons happens at the 2:50 mark on this video, when lead singer Zach Williams cuts loose with a long, wordless, heart-wrenching yelp that seems to find its origin in the soles of his shoes. It’s the sort of vocal mastery that makes you realize how boring most lead singers actually sound when they start riffing. They should take their cues from Williams, clearly.
“Two Sides of Lonely”
In our chat with Williams, he said “Two Sides of Lonely” is “terribly sad,” which is sort of like saying Venus is “terribly far.”
“I think that even though this song is terribly hard to sing,” Williaims says, “it reminds me of dark moments in my life. I want to sing it because it’s helping me relive things that I didn’t want to forget.” Well, it is unforgettable. We’ll give him that.
“Teach Me to Know”
This tune offers a different sound for the Lone Bellow, and it’s a welcome one. Instead of the crescendo-ing heartbreak communicated through most of the trio’s songs, this one is a slow, cheerful burner. It has a patient joy to it that keeps you waiting for a giant breakdown that never quite comes. It’s a tension that keeps you trying to figure out what you missed on the first listen.
“Looking For You”
Listen here for the Lone Bellow’s stripped down, softer side. Where most of their songs soar, this one quietly tiptoes, like a secret between sisters. It showcases the sort of gentle musing this band is capable of and serves as a reminder that you don’t have to be loud to be powerful.
