Boston Marathon Bomber Sentenced to Death

After 14 hours of deliberation, a jury in Boston sentenced Dzhokhar Tsarnaev to death for his part in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing. Last month, Tsarnaev was found guilty of all 30 charges against him, and 17 of those carried the death penalty. The bombing killed three people and injured more than 250—including 17 people who lost at least one leg. The death sentence is rare in Massachusetts, where there is no death penalty for state crimes.

As The New York Times points out polls of Massachusetts residents showed a vast majority of them thought Tsarnaev, who is 21, should be sentenced to life in prison. “Many respondents said that life in prison for one so young would be a fate worse than death, and some worried that execution would make him a martyr.” Tsarnaev is expected to appeal the decision, a process which could take years or even decades …
