Yup, Congress Members Still Get Paid During the Shutdown

Last night, after weeks of bickering over measures that would potentially delay or defund Obamacare, Republican and Democrat leaders in Congress did the mature thing—they argued into the early morning hours, couldn’t come to an agreement and decided to just go ahead and shut down the Federal government. That means that about 800,000 government employees won’t be receiving paychecks. This, of course, does not include actual Senators or members of Congress, who will still get paid because they are, paradoxically, classified as “essential personnel.” Though several congressional leaders have offered to not receive a paycheck during the shutdown they orchestrated, many have said they have no intention of doing so. Also, their own staffs aren’t guaranteed pay checks either, so that’s fair. Also public services—funded by American taxpayers—like the National Parks will close and the U.S. economy will lose close to $1 billion a week. Ironically, Obamacare legislation isn’t even directly connected to funding the government and will be essentially unaffected by the shutdown …
