Young Man Who Spent Years in Jail Without Conviction Commits Suicide

According to a report in the New Yorker, Kalief Browder, 22, committed suicide this weekend. Browder was the subject of a heartbreaking New Yorker story, which recounted how, at the age of 16, he was thrown in the brutal Rikers Island jail for a crime he was innocent of. After spending three years in the jail—where he was beaten by staff and other inmates and spent two years in solitary confinement—the charges against him were dropped. According to Buzzfeed, he had also attempted suicide while in jail and since his release, but told Headline News back in 2013, “Prior to going to jail, I never had any mental illnesses” …
