Earlier this week, the U.N. Commissioner for Human Rights issued a startling report, claiming that 75 bodies were found in a mass grave in South Sudan, as further evidence that ethnic violence within the young country was getting worse. Now, the U.N. mission in South Sudan has denied that report, saying that the numbers were inflated, and a “skirmish” resulted in the deaths of 15 people. Despite the discrepancy with the U.N. numbers, the international community remains concerned that clashes within South Sudan could erupt into widespread violence. It’s estimated that the conflicts between ethnic groups and disputes over oil reserves have left more than 60,000 displaced.
