Police have confirmed that two teens were shot and killed this morning in an “isolated incident” at Independence High School in Glendale, Arizona. The shooting occurred at a covered patio near the school’s main building just before 8 a.m. The school has since been placed on lockdown. A spokesperson said investigators want to assure parents that their “children are safe.” She added that this is not an active shooter situation, and that officials are not necessarily looking for a suspect. The victims are two 15-year-old females, whose names remain unavailable to news sources. Glendale Vice Mayor Ian Hugh is calling the shooting “a horrible tragedy” and said that city officials are following the developments. Glendale Union High School District posted the following statement on their Facebook page:
Independence High School was put on lock down this morning due to a police investigation. Police have secured the campus. There is no active shooter on campus. The investigation is ongoing. The campus remains on lock down and no one will be allowed to enter or exit the campus until the police have lifted the lock down and ensured the safety of the school. Parents will be notified as soon as it is safe for students to be picked up from campus. We will actively communicate with parents as more information is available.
Arizona Governor Doug Ducey said via Twitter, “Our prayers are with the students, educators & families at Independence High School & all the first responders on the scene.”
