Scientists have gotten their closest look yet at some strange white spots on a planet called Ceres—that’s 257 million miles away—and they still have no idea what the spots are. NASA’s Dawn spacecraft has been orbiting the dwarf planet, snapping new (relatively) close-up images that show bright, white spots—which appear to be glowing—inside of a crater. In a statement, a NASA spokesperson said, “The bright spots in this configuration make Ceres unique from anything we’ve seen before in the solar system. The science team is working to understand their source. Reflection from ice is the leading candidate in my mind, but the team continues to consider alternate possibilities, such as salt.” Hear that? It’s just ice, or salt, definitely not an unknown alien species developing new technology to overtake humanity. Just weird, glowing salt, that’s all. Nothing to see here …
