Science: Loving Your Neighbor Is Good for Your Health

Science has just confirmed the golden rule. A team from the University of Michigan looked at the cardiovascular health of a group of 5,276 people over the age of 50 for four years, asking them to also score themselves on questions that gauge the quality of their relationships with their neighbors and fellow community members. In a statement from the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health where the study was published, the group revealed a strong link between heart health and loving thy neighbor: “Having good neighbors and feeling connected to others in the local community may help to curb an individual’s heart attack risk.” Just how significant is the link? People who scored the highest in having good neighbor relationships were at 67 percent reduced risk for heart attack, “approximately comparable to the reduced heart attack risk of a smoker vs a non-smoker,” the co-author told AFP news …
