Several reports about the events immediately before, and soon after the kidnapping of nearly 300 schoolgirls in Nigeria are painting the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan in an extremely bad light. Amnesty International says that the Nigerian government had warning hours prior to the mass abduction, saying that the military “was aware of the impending attack soon after 7:00 p.m. on April 14, close to four hours before Boko Haram began their assault on the town.” Despite the advanced warning, the military, possibly because of a lack of ability to mobilize and hesitation about fighting well-armed terrorist, did not send additional forces to the small town, which was unable to fight off Boko Haram.
According to another report, President Jonathan also refused international help to find the girls immediately following the abduction. Secretary of State John Kerry said that the United States offered assistance soon after the attack, and the British Foreign Office said their government would have provided help that week.
