According to early reports, at least 127 were killed and hundreds more were injured after a magnitude-7.5 earthquake struck in a remote area of Afghanistan near its border with Pakistan. The massive event happened Monday afternoon, local time. Tremors were reportedly felt hundreds of miles away, as far as New Delhi.
The U.S. Geological Survey released a statement saying, “Significant casualties are likely and the disaster is potentially widespread. Past events with this alert level have required a regional or national level response,” and India’s Prime Minister also tweeted, “I have asked for an urgent assessment and we stand ready for assistance where required, including Afghanistan & Pakistan.” We’ll post more updates as they become available.
