A new heartbreaking report from the journal JAMA Pediatrics has found that teens who are the victims of bullying are 2.5 times more likely to attempt suicide. Cyberbulling was particularly destructive, with young victims having suicidal thoughts at three times the rate of average teens. For their investigation, the researchers examined reports of teen suicide around the world, dating all the way back to 1901, and found a strong correlation between bullying and young people that actually killed themselves. Noting that somewhere between 5% and 8% of teens will attempt suicide every year, leading researcher Mitch van Geel told The Los Angeles Times, “Suicide is one of the most important reasons for adolescent mortality worldwide.
