Report: 75% of Rescued Boko Haram Hostages Were Children; Many Under 5

In an interview with NPR, a child protection coordinator at the International Rescue Committee said that of nearly 300 people recently rescued from Boko Haram, the vast majority are just children. Kiryn Lanning told the outlet,

Of the 275, I think there’s been a lot of attention on the women. But I do want to highlight that only 68 of them were women. The majority of them were children. So about 75 percent of the population is children that came in … Well, about 116 of them are below the age of 5.

The children were rescued as part of a military offensive against the radical Islamic group, known for their campaigns of abductions, mass murders and terrorism in northern Nigeria. The children have been brought to a refugee camp where they are receiving medical treatment and counseling while officials attempt to reunite them with their families …
