Officials to Reexamine Rape Case of Teen Who Committed Suicide

A Justice Minister in Canada has asked officials to present him options to reexamine the case against four teenage boys who allegedly raped (and photographed the attack) a teen girl who killed herself this week. The teenage girl hanged herself after being tormented by bullies when photos of the alleged rape were circulated among classmates. The incident happened in 2011, when she was just 15 years old.

According to the girl’s mother, when they originally brought the crime to police, they were told it would be too difficult to prosecute, because ultimately it was a “he said, she said” situation. Now, Nova Scotia Justice Minister Ross Landry has said that he is reviewing the case, and has met with the young victim’s mother. “It’s never too late to do the right thing … We’ve got to explore the options to review the actions of our authorities to ensure that our system is working”.
