Myanmar Leadership Host Rare Meetings with Activist Aung San Suu Kyi

The president of Myanmar (also known as Burma) as well as the country’s military chief recently took a face-to-face meeting with Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi. It’s the first time all three have discussed reforms together, despite Suu Kyi calling for the meeting for months. The political activist is not allowed to run in the nation’s upcoming presidential election (because her children are British citizens), but has been internationally recognized for her efforts to push for democratic reforms in the country.

The rare meetings come just two weeks before President Obama will meet regional leaders during an international summit host in Myanmar. Critics of the government and military have accused the nation’s leadership of only holding the meeting for show ahead of the talks with President Obama …
