MTV Is Making a Reality Show about Abstinence

Last year, MTV pulled the plug on a reality series titled My First, after an online uproar over the show’s premise: a look at young people who were seeking to lose their virginity. Now, the network known for sleazy reality staples like Jersey Shore, has announced another show on the same topic, but from a very different perspective. A new yet-to-be-titled show will look at the lives several 18-to 25-year-olds as they are “plagued with the overwhelming question of keeping their virginity… or losing it.”

The show will even include messaging from the network’s award-winning It’s Your (Sex) Life campaign that promotes abstinence as one of the ways to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. From the IYSL site: “Sometimes, it can seem like you’re the only one who isn’t having sex, but you’re not alone! … There are so many smart reasons to wait: Maybe it’s to find that someone special, or you just don’t want to stress about getting a STD or pregnancy … When someone really cares about you, that person won’t want you to do anything you’re not up for.” It seems like an odd fit for the same network that’s been behind some of TV’s most controversial shows. Entertainment Weekly has already dubbed it “the anti-Jersey Shore” …
