Mother of Imprisoned Missionary Kenneth Bae Visits Son in North Korea

Myunghee Bae, the mother of missionary Kenneth Bae, has been able to visit her son, who is currently serving a 15-year prison sentence in North Korea. Kenneth Bae has been temporarily moved to a hospital because of his declining health. Though he has lost as much as 50 pounds and is suffering from a variety of health problems, Myunghee Bae says that her son is doing better than he was when he appeared on a video interview from prison in July. Kenneth Bae, an American citizen, was arrested in November under accusations that he was attempting to overthrow the government. Bae, who was visiting North Korea legally as a tour operator, has admitted to also being a Christian missionary. Some believe the charges may stem from his work photographing and documenting orphans in North Korea, as a way to raise awareness about their awful living conditions. In August, North Korea rescinded an invitation to a special American envoy that many believe would lead to Bae’s release.
