After a month-long stakeout, police in Mexico have arrested the mayor of Iguala, Jose Luis Abarca, and his wife Maria de los Angeles Pineda. Authorities believe the two are behind the disappearance of 43 college students in September in an incident that has sparked outrage across the country. On September 26, police confronted the group of teaching students who were apparently on their way to demonstrate at a speech by the mayor’s wife, opening fire on them, killing six. In order to prevent them from disrupting the event, the students were then handed over to members of a drug gang, who loaded them into a dump truck and drove to the edge of town. They haven’t been seen since.
At a nearby location, a mass grave has been found, but the bodies have not been identified as the students. Officials believe that Jose Luis Abarca, and Maria de los Angeles Pineda had ties to a local drug cartel, and routinely paid off members of the area’s police department.
