A new German study is suggesting that, contrary to conventional opinion/common sense, pessimism may actually help you live longer and, get this, be happier. The study hold particularly true for the elderly, as the study says that that over two-thirds of German seniors who expected life to mostly just get worse actually had better health outcomes.
“If you really think about the future in five years,” said Frieder R. Lang, a professor at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and the German Institute for Economic Research. “Understanding that although things are fine right now they might get worse, this seems to have a positive effect on lower disability risks and lower mortality risks.” So, being negative may actually help you live longer.
