Is the Loch Ness Monster Proof That Evolution is a Myth?

Christian schools in Louisiana are going to start using curriculum that teaches the Loch Ness Monster is a real creature, and is proof that evolution is false. The logic is that the Loch Ness Monster is a dinosaur, and her continued existence is a fatal flaw in Charles Darwin's theory. This has drawn the ire of critics, who've expressed outrage at the number of students who attend these schools using publicly-funded vouchers ...

Dang it! I was going to propose that we use the overwhelming evidence of Bigfoot to disprove evolution... but I guess these geniuses beat me to it.

This just makes Christians look (more) stupid, which wouldn't really matter if it didn't have the potential to turn people away from the gospel. They are fighting an accepted theory to protect what some would consider a myth, using something that most people consider a myth.

We have to care about howChristianityis represented not because it insults our pride to be associated with people who use ridiculous arguments, but because how Christianity is viewed plays a role in evangelism. Should we care about our image much at all? How do we deal with people who we think poorly represent the church? Should we respond to theChristianswho are putting out images of Christ that we don't like or to the people receiving those images?

Christians who try to reconcile the theory of evoltion with Genesis 1, or even with a belief in a Creator God are missing a much bigger point. Darwin's theory is all predicated on the premise of "the survival of the fittest" - the strong species survive and the weak die or get out of the way. If Darwinian evolution IS true, than Ayn Rand, Glen Beck, and Rush Limbaugh are all right. There is absolutely no point in working for justice and equality, or showing compassion for the poor and oppressed - to do so is just fighting against science and nature. All the work of liberals, Democrats, Obama suporters, Occupy Wall Streeters and compassionate Christians is just spitting in the wind if Darwin was right. You can bend the creation accounts in Genesis to make them fit with a belief in evolutionary theory. But to unquestionably buy into the whole of Darwin's theory guts the very essence of the Gospel and Jesus' teachings.
