Kanye West Launches Free Music School for Youth in Chicago

The non-profit started by hip-hop star Kanye West, Donda’s House, is launching a music-writing program for at-risk youths in Chicago. The free school will feature courses on writing songs and recording music, as well as, health and wellness programs that equip students with nutritional resources and even personal fitness plans. In an interview with Jet magazine, Donda’s House executive director Donnie Smith said the program is targeted to students in the 15-to 24-year-old demographic because, “If you look at individuals who perpetuate violence in the city, that’s the age range.” He said, “We want to get kids in high school, that young adult age range who are confused about where they are in life. We want to give them direction … so many people have just given up on that demographic.” Though the initial school will be based out of St. Sabina’s Church in Chicago, Donda’s House eventually plans to take its programs nationwide …
