As you may have heard, reliably newsworthy Kanye West made news for telling a fan to “stand up” at one of his concerts. Of course, from his vantage point, he couldn’t tell the fan was in a wheelchair It was an unfortunate mixup, made worse by Kanye’s evident skepticism about whether or not the fan was being honest about his handicap. News outlets have reported on this whoops moment with the sort of schadenfreude reserved for celebrities who stumble mid-game, but West responded at a concert in Australia, saying,
It’s like, ‘Welcome to today’s news, ladies and gentlemen.’ We’ve got Americans getting killed on TV, kids getting killed every weekend in Chicago, unarmed people getting killed by police officers……It makes you just want to reflect on what are the things that are a little bit more sensationalized than others. … Because they’ve got this thing where they want the masses—people who’ve never heard my albums—to somehow read a headline that reads negative, and think that I’m a bad person or something. I’m not judging, I’m just going to tell you who I am. I’m a married, Christian man …Anyone here that’s married or that’s in a relationship knows that there’s enough things working against you.
Ye has never been bashful about being a Christian, but he’s also not bashful about being “Yeezus” so, well, there’s a lot to sort through here …
