K-Cup Creator Feels Bad about All the Pollution Invention Has Caused

K-Cups may have helped make brewing single cups of coffee a lot easier, but they’ve wreaked havoc on the environment. According to some estimates, so many were trashed in 2014 alone, that if lined up, they’d circle the earth more than 12 times! Now, the guy who invented them, John Sylvan, admits, “I feel bad sometimes that I ever did it.” In an interview with The Atlantic, he also explained, “No matter what they say about recycling, those things will never be recyclable.” Because of the plastics and materials used to help it withstand brewing, the individual cups are extremely difficult to breakdown and recycle. Even Keurig, the company behind K-cups and the brewing machines, admits that a fully recyclable version is years away. Sylvan told the magazine, “I don’t have one. They’re kind of expensive to use.
