HBO is backing a new documentary about Scientology, and they’ve hired a massive legal team in the process. HBO Documentary Films President Sheila Nevins told The Hollywood Reporter, “We have probably 160 lawyers [looking at the film].” The Church of Scientology is infamously litigious and protective of its image. The movie, which is being directed by Alex Gibney (who won an Oscar for Taxi to the Dark Side) is based on the book Going Clear, which made waves when revealed the dark side of the church’s reputation, particularly when it comes to accusations of abuse.
The group has vehemently denied many of accusations. According to THR, the film “is expected to feature new revelations about the controversial religion and its famous followers Tom Cruise and John Travolta” and is expected to be submitted Sundance Film Festival this January …
