Evangelist Billy Graham May Get a Statue in the U.S. Capitol

Late last week, North Carolina lawmakers approved a plan to build a statue of the state’s most famous son inside the Capitol. According to federal law, each state may contribute two statues that reflect a significant part of the state’s history. In the proposal, Graham’s likeness would replace one of former N.C. governor Charles Aycock, who had ties to the white supremacist movement. One of the only guidelines for the state is that the person honored with the statue is no longer living. With Graham’s health declining, those behind the project hope it will be a fitting memorial of the preacher who consistently appears atop the nation’s “most-admired” lists. The bill now heads to Governor Pat McCrory for final approval. In addition, lawmakers voted to request that the U.S. Postal Service honor Graham with a stamp.
