Christian Protestors and Police Faceoff Following Church Bombings in Pakistan

Christian demonstrators are facing off with police in Pakistan after two bombings this weekend targeted local church communities. Police in Lahore reportedly used tear gas on groups of Christian protestors, angry after 17 people were killed during the suicide bomb attacks. On Sunday morning, two Taliban terrorists detonated bombs targeting churchgoers in a Christian neighborhood that wounded at least 70 people, in addition to claiming the lives of 17 victims. Christians and religious minorities are frequent targets of attacks and discrimination in the largely Muslim country.

The country’s Interior Minister called the bombings an “inhuman act of terrorism.” The Pakistan military is engaged in a campaign to fight Taliban insurgents throughout the county. According to the AP, the demonstrations have taken a violent turn: “Angry Christian mobs blocked the highway, ransacked bus terminals and burned two people to death who they suspected of being involved in the bombings.” In addition to a police response, officials have sent in troops to the region …
