According to an analysis from Pew and CQ Roll Call, America’s new Congress is almost entirely composed of Christians. The report looked at how legislators self-identified their religious affiliation. More than half of lawmakers are Protestant (55 percent of the Senate and 57.7 percent of the House), more than a quarter are Catholic (41.7 percent of the House and 26 percent of the Senate) and there are five Orthodox Christians in the House of Representatives. Two percent of Congress either responded “don’t know” or “refused to answer”). No other single religion made up more than 9 percent of either the House or the Senate.
Democratic Rep. Krysten Sinema of Arizona is the only person ever to serve in Congress to answer “none” when asked about her religious beliefs. There are currently only two Muslim Congressional lawmakers, one Buddhist, one Hindu and one Unitarian. As PBS notes, the religious breakdown in Congress is increasingly non-representative of the American population: Pew has found that 20 percent of the country “either do not identify with a religion, are agnostic or are atheist” …
