‘Mighty Ducks’ Star Shaun Weiss’ First Role Since Getting Sober Will Be in ‘Jesus Revolution’

The Erwin brothers’ Jesus Revolution movie is still coming together, which will tell the story of the early days of the 1970s religious revival started by a handful of Christian hippies in California. Joel Courtney will star as Greg Laurie, the young man who teamed up with Pastor Chuck Smith (Kelsey Grammar) to bring a counter cultural, rock and roll flavor what became known as the Jesus Revolution. And now, the movie has cast its latest star, who has his own heartening story.

You may remember actor Shaun Weiss for his role as Greg Goldberg, the long-suffering goalie in The Mighty Ducks. The ensuing years have been very difficult for Weiss, who struggled with a drug addiction that culminated in his 2020 arrest for burglary while under the influence of meth. Concerned friends set up a GoFundMe page to pay for Weiss’ time at a sober living facility. Since then, Weiss has graduated from drug court and is now celebrating two years sober, charting his ongoing journey for thousands of fans on social media.

Now, Weiss is set for his first acting gig since getting sober. He tells TMZ he’ll be playing a Vietnam vet struggling with addiction who finds healing with the Jesus Revolution community. Apparently, someone involved with Jesus Revolution heard about Weiss’ story and thought he’d be a great fit for the role. Weiss auditioned over Zoom, one thing led to another, and here we are.

The movie will also star Anna Grace Barlow, Jonathan Roumie and Nicholas Cirillo to tell the story of one of the most interesting and impactful Christian movements of the last 50 years. It’ll be directed by Jon Erwin (American Underdog) and Brent McCorkle (Unconditional).

“The movie is set in a very specific time and place, but the theme of finding a deeper meaning to life, in the midst of a fractured and broken world, is timeless,” Erwin said.
