I usually start an entry in my personal blog with some random and likely insignificant musing about my day or about the weather or about how much i hate that summer has ended. But i won’t do that here…
Instead, I’ll start this way: I grew up just outside of Toronto, Ontario and went to the University of Toronto to study english after high school. When i’m not at work, serving in student ministries at my church or out with friends, you’re most likely to find me outside with my nose in a book, cup of tea in hand, or typing away at my computer.
As I mentioned in “Charity is Not Enough” (from the Revolution section of harmless-soccer.flywheelstaging.com), I’ve been concerned about issues of “justice” since my brother was old enough to take my toys and since I realized that, although he was younger than me, his bedtime was mysteriously the same. Yes, compared to issues of injustice that some people in North America and the rest of the world face today, bedtimes and toy stealing are fairly trivial. I do believe, in some odd way, that this acute sense of fairness I have has contributed to my concern for those more pressing issues and my desire to do more than ignore them.
My work at World Vision over the past six years, most recently as a representative for Northern Ontario, has been a good fit for me. I’m indebted to the global perspective World Vision has helped me to develop as I navigated North American high school and university culture. Have I completely resigned myself from the luxuries of our culture?…Not exactly. Even so, the stories I’ve heard, the prayers I’ve prayed and the people I’ve talked to at world vision and in my own travels have taught me that to simply live comfortably is not enough.
And that begins my first entry of what will hopefully be a neat opportunity to explore faith and justice and injustice and everything else related!
