Jason Russell, Invisible Children Co-Founder, Detained

Jason Russell, a co-founder of Invisible Children and the most visible architect of the recent "Kony 2012" viral video phenomenon, was arrested in San Diego last night (update: news reports now say that Russell was "detained," not "arrested"). Russell was taken into custody for public masturbation, vandalizing cars and public drunkenness. More details after the jump ...

Police say they found Russell in his underwear and that he was acting very strangely. Invisible Children's CEO, Ben Keesey, released this official statement:

Jason Russell was unfortunately hospitalized yesterday sufferingfrom exhaustion, dehydration, and malnutrition. He is now receivingmedical care and is focused on getting better. The past two weeks havetaken a severe emotional toll on all of us, Jason especially, and thattoll manifested itself in an unfortunate incident yesterday. Jason’spassion and his work have done so much to help so many, and we aredevastated to see him dealing with this personal health issue. We willalways love and support Jason, and we ask that you give his entirefamily privacy during this difficult time.

As sad as this story is, I am refreshed by the comments made on this story that speak of prayer and grace. Every other comment I'd heard from mainstream outlets made me want to scream for lack of compassion.

I am very hopeful for Jason, it sounds like he is dealing with a mental illness, but because of his age and the severe shift from normal to odd behavior makes me believe that this is stress related and that he has a good chance for a full recovery. Maybe I am wrong, but I have hope, and I am glad so many other people are ready to pray for him and offer him grace!

Later news updates state that he wasn't intoxicated or abusing a substance- definitely seems like stress/mental problem, according to the opinion of a psych dr. in the Atlantic.com

Once again, I'm realizing how much weight our words can tear down. I can't help but think the emotional breakdown of this man is a direct result of the cruel and harmful things we have said against him as a nation. How would you respond if everyone turned what you did for good, for evil?! ...I would probably have a meltdown too...
