The Rocketboys fall into the "good things" category, hands down. Recently moved to Austin, but originally from Abilene, this six-piece band is one of the best bands you've probably never heard of. They used to go by the name Homer Hiccolm and the Rocketboys, but due to continual misspellings at venues and in articles, they collectively decided to drop the "Homer Hiccolm" bit. They've got a new album to be released this fall as solely The Rocketboys, and thus far, things are going great for them.
If The Appleseed Cast, Explosions in the Sky, The Album Leaf and Coldplay all had a music baby, you might end up with The Rocketboys. The music is dramatic, epic and constantly building, and singer Brandon Kinder's lyrics are always rhythmic, catchy and encouraging. They are longtime participants in Texas' Austin City Limits and SXSW festivals, and are slowly but surely gathering a strong, widespread fan base.
They performed today in an intimate tent at Cornerstone, and though Kinder was very under the weather, their performance was on point. As someone who has been listening for a while, it was an exciting experience to see them live. Hearing songs that were familiar to me, that brought me back to such joyful moments in my life—it's the kind of nostalgia that all of us would love for music to bring us to. There were only a handful of us able to sing along during the show, but the line of new fans grabbing CDs and shirts afterwards was twice as long.
The Rocketboys are going all over the East Coast this summer, so if you're anywhere between Texas and New York, do everything in your power to see them. You won't regret it. If for some reason you're still struggling to understand just how amazing this band is, go check out their MySpace page and see for yourself.
