Dust coats everything in a pale shade of brown, hiding reality from those who walk by. If they glanced for a moment, they would see what is going on. From toddlers to old age the poor beg. Some for themselves and others for someone else. A few sit in front of plastic sheet houses that cannot keep weather and people out. The luckier ones in front of tin shacks, but not inside for it becomes a sauna in the heat of the day. As the light fades the women move toward dark corners in order to sell themselves to feed their children. But still, after all that, it is not enough, it's never enough. The report is essentially a diagnostic tool to assess every country’s efforts on fighting human trafficking, or more accurately, modern day slavery. Behind every heartbreaking statistic is a life and story. The numbers are mixed with narratives, which I always appreciate.

As the World Cup heats up in South Africa, new sporting controversies and legends are sure to grab our attention, as they have in years past. Devotees are sure to remember, for example, the exploits of Argentinean attacker Diego Maradona in the 1986 games. In addition to scoring what is remembered as “the goal of the century” in the quarter-finals match, Maradona had snapped what appeared to be a miraculous header past the outstretched goalkeeper. Dubbed the “Hand of God” goal after the match, Maradona later revealed that it had been a flick of his own hand—concealed by a quick head fake to evade detection—that illegally propelled the goal into the net.
