The Art Of Snacking

If you’re like us here at RELEVANTmagazine, we like to have a nice supply of snacks on hand since we work long and hard. In fact, we’re always in search of “the perfect snack.” When we’re not talking about cutting-edge design, life-changing articles or how to end world hunger, we often talk about smoothies, cereal and Twizzlers.

Mmm … Twizzlers.

We asked some of our contributing writers what they like to munch on during those long afternoon hours when work seems endless and the stomach begins to eat its own lining. Some of these ideas are healthy; some aren’t so healthy. Some are just weird and one is even for dogs. But all are personally recommended, kid-tested and mother-approved. Post your own snack ideas at the end of this article and tell us what gets you through the day. We want to know.

[+] “A local grocery store here has a whole health section that offers bulk bins of loose granola—lots of flavors and mixes. We get a big bag of it (French Vanilla is pretty tasty, or Apple Cinnamon) and snack on that throughout the week. It makes for a good breakfast cereal (with milk) or ice cream topping, too. Granola: Not just for Birkenstockers anymore.” —Jason Boyett

[+] “Pretzels and mustard rule.” —Jessica Leopold

[+] “A few of my favorites: Lean Pockets (For when you have to have something hot.) Instant oatmeal packets (Very filling. Just add hot water.) Fresh, or even canned, fruit Soup in a can (now they have the cool pop-top lids). I usually go for the tomato or creamy tomato kinds that are low in fat (but high in sodium).” —Melanie Seibert

[+] “Well, I don’t have a recipe for it, but my favorite snack food is bruschetta. It’s basically diced tomatoes, basil, olive oil, onions, garlic and sometimes a cheese of some sort. You serve it chilled over warm bread or crackers and it is just delightful!! I also enjoy sparkling sugar free Jello. You just buy a sugar free sparkling Jello packet and get sparkling water or seltzer (sometimes you can find the same flavor water as Jello) and follow the directions. Very good and easy—but of course, you have to wait four hours.” —Karen Huber

[+] “Chex Mix. Low Fat Animal Crackers. Twizzlers.” —Cameron Strang

[+] “Flavor-Ice (25 calories/each, no fat, 2% fruit juice). Saltine crackers (are they low-fat?). Stale microwave popcorn (honestly… I really like it when it’s been sitting out for a day or two).” —Faith Hopler

[+] “Pirate’s Booty (puffed rice snack from Trader Joe’s that tastes like white cheddar popcorn, but is much better for you). Dried fruit such as: Craisins (dried, sweetened cranberries) dried cherries, mangoes, apricots. Baby carrots. Red licorice—not exactly healthy, but low-fat.” —Robin Lemke

[+] “Sherbet – 0 fat grams! Sorbet – 0 fat grams! Salsa – 1 fat gram (with 3 fat grams/30 chips of low fat baked tortilla chips) Dr. Pepper – 0 fat grams! (I can burn off the calories from sugar by metabolizing all that caffeine! Don’t get on the "Dr.," now. I’d use Dr. Pepper toothpaste if they made it. We actually have a sweet potato recipe that uses the ‘Pepper.’ You’ll need a nap afterward, though.) Calories be darned! Scoop, chip, dip and sip full speed ahead!” —Andrew McLemore

[+] “Cottage cheese and pineapple (high protein/low carb). Fruit smoothie: 1 cup apple juice, 1 cup frozen strawberries, 1/4 orange juice, 2 scoops of protein powder, one banana mix in blender until smooth.” —Kyle Chowning

[+] “Um, I’m not much into low-fat (I’m more of an extra-cheese pizza type of girl myself…), but my dog, Lucy, REALLY enjoys these 5 Flavors (chicken, beef, vegetable, lamb and peanut butter) Milk Bones. They only have 25 calories per biscuit and .05g of fat and only 5.0% Crude fat. Yum. Yum. I suppose if you’re looking for a cheap snack and a good way to buddy up to your mutt, this is the way to go. And besides, they’re colorful, they’ll give your fresh breath and clean your teeth while you work! Can Tic Tacs or Listerine Packs do that? I don’t think so!” —Jenny Wilder

[+] “Sunmaid makes these great snack packs of raisins, goldens & cherries, cranberries and dried apricots that I keep on hand for blood sugar lows. I’m also a big fan of sugar snap peas. And almonds. Not low-fat, almonds, but good fat. And if we’re talking good fat, I love whole mile yogurt with maple syrup and walnuts. Mmm…” —Katy Bowser

[+] “Hard boil eggs and just eat the whites (15 calories compared to 70 for the whole egg). I buy fresh fruit and cut it up myself and freeze it. Bananas, strawberries and peaches are great. Frozen grapes are the absolute best. Apples work, too! I grill chicken and keep it in the fridge for a high protein, low carb snack. Microwave popcorn. Canada Dry’s raspberry or lime seltzer water. (Okay, it’s not food per se, but it’s yummy and has zero calories.) E-mergen-C—those little vitamin C packed packets can give a nice boost to a lazy afternoon for nearly zero calories. A glass of orange juice—highly satisfying and kicks the low blood sugar crash. Hummus with celery or carrots. Or sometimes I just gnaw on my hand.” —Margaret Feinberg

[+] “Dried pineapple. Don’t even get me started on the joys of this snack…” —Megan Lenz

[+] “Strawberries. Pretzels. Peanuts. Make a giant thing of chex mix and snack on it for a week. Bananas. Sunflower seeds. Yogurt.” —Jesse Eubanks

[+] “Sausage.” —Bobby Jones

[+] “My favorite low-fat snack is those little grape tomatoes. I can just put a bunch in a little bag and pop them in my mouth when I’m hungry because they don’t need to be refrigerated. They are a sweeter tomato so they taste good just by themselves.” —Amber Allen

[+] “When I need a break from arterty-cloggin’ or teeth-rotting elements, I often turn to whole almonds. A little expensive, but it doesn’t take many of them to fill you up. I’m also a big fan of raspberries but their in-season is a narrow window.” —Dan Buck

[+] “LIFE cereal and sugar-free butterscotch hard candy.” —Cara Baker

[+] “Homemade granola with plenty of dried fruit bits (craisins, raisins, apples, cherries, etc.) is my favorite. Not exactly something you can pick up at the grocery store, but still tasty and healthy. And I always remember the immortal words of Homer J. Simpson, ‘This one has purple in it—purple’s a fruit.’” —Kevin D. Hendricks
