"Where is God in Mental Illness?" written by Evelyn Anne Clausen a while back illicits a response with heartfelt understanding. I am a bi-polar individual having suffered from this debilitating roller coaster of mania and depression for forty years. I was converted early on, which was an extreme advantage, bringing hope and the knowledge that Christ's perfection, not mine, would aid in my recovery.

You see, it was then that I realized that my identity in this world was actually formed by Christ.

I could stand aside, as it were, helpless, depressed, psychotic, fearful, and confused and let Jesus enter my world in all His glory and perfection saying, "Paula, I am here as your anchor to steady the boat in this turbulent journey you face."

"Why then, Lord, did you allow so many horrifying incidents to happen since then?" I was hospitalized nine times; saw countless psychiatrists and was on numerous pill regiments throughout the years; attempted suicide four times; was homeless twice; had two head-on collisions for speeding; attended five colleges with no degrees; and had seventeen jobs before the age of twenty-three. Through it all, my faith lingered, but as a "mustard seed". But God has His way of making all things work together for good. He has given me the opportunity to be the author of "The Bi-Polar's Song", currently on Amazon. The book is a frank look at my past which includes whimsical and thoughtful poetry. It was created out of empathy for those who travel this difficult road as well. None of us desire to have life's insanity touch us, but for those who suffer, much love, compassion, and understanding are the keys to helping the mentally ill survive.

I come across loved ones and caregivers all the time through my speeches who share their stories. The common thread of my response is to turn to the great healer, Christ, whose resurrected power and grace enable each of us to walk outside the door each day with
confidence in him rather than ourselves. May God Bless each one of you until we meet in Heaven where no tears and no suffering will plague us at all.

Greetings my name is Netheldia Sheree Porter. I was born on April 30 1965 and I am the
oldest of 10 children. I grew up in Los Angeles California and spent most of my young adult life
in Long Beach. I did very well in school, and I was an active member of the JR Navy ROTC.
Sadly, I was molested as a child beginning at the age of 4 by neighborhood old men and late teenage women–no one ever knew. I dropped out of high school, but I have two colleges certifications, one in Human Social Services and the other in Alcohol and Drug Studies. I began abusing alcohol and drug when I was 9 years old, and this life style took me down many avenues in which I would not wish on my worse enemy. Even though I came from a middle class family never wanting for nothing, I lived on skid row because of my addiction for a while and was in and out of several treatment
centers. During the time that I was bound and incarcerated by these poison chemicals, I had
three near death experiences, and was put in jail and prison more times then I care to remember.
Giving all praises to God, I have been off drugs for 14 years now. You see when I found out I was pregnant with my third child, I checked myself into my fourth treatment center because I refused to allow another child of mines to get caught up in the Child Protective Services –and I had finally gotten tried of being a drug addict! Speaking of children, my oldest daughter who is 25 now, was in the child protective system a great deal of her life, now she works for that system herself. My 18 years old who my sister took care of “off and on” is now married to a young man in the United States Navy. My 15 year old “whom I took care of from birth” is a straight “A”&“B” student and goes to school at Cal State University during the summer, and one Saturday a month during school time. As you can tell I am very proud of my children, they went through a lot. Gracefully, we all have an outstanding relationship. A woman with my past could not have asked for a greater gift, then to be at peace with the children that she selfishly neglected, while abusing alcohol and drugs. These girls look up to me, and admire me. God does answers prayers of restoration!
In 2000 I was diagnosed with a pulmonary brain tumor, and a breast tumor, and have been touched and healed of them both; therefore, I know that God has a special plan for my life. As a turn of events I wrote a book called “Stepping Out of Addiction” because I wanted to reach people who struggle with addictions and all the problem that comes with it. Most people think that there is no hope, and they will live like that forever–they are so wrong. I am living proof that a person can recover and live a fruitful life. If God helped me he’ll help anybody.
As a reult of my experiance I wrot a book called Stepping Out Of Addiction which is inspired from my personal true life events. I have lived the life of being bound by control substances, as well as experienced the trials and tribulations in which one may encountered, fearing there was no hope or way out. So when I say that I have written a book that identify with most of society in one way or another, its a fact and not fiction. Most people think that there is no hope or help-- but there is.
Stepping Out Of Addiction is designed to speak to people who are suffering from life in a language that they can understand. There are no big words to figure out, it gets straight to the point and holds no punches. It can be comprehended by all who reads it—calm enough for a child to understand, yet strong enough to capture the attention of an adult. The skills in this book are practiced by people everyday, therefore anybody who is struggling and suffering from life in general can benefit from reading this book. This book gives a strong sense of redirection, and it helps individuals to make positive, meaningful, and major changes in there life, so that one can live a fruitful life. This book offer individuals a sense of total victory and every lasting changes in their lives without being bias, judgmental, nor does it discriminate. Bottom line everyone deserves a chance to live a fruitful life, and have total victory. Every day life with its trials, tribulations, testes, and disappointments can break the spirit of any human being. Stepping Out Of Addiction teaches individuals how to cope with those unforeseen and troubling issues that often occurs in everyday life. Basically one could and should do as a woman in labor does during these times (because after all one is birthing a new you)---PUSH.
