Physicists today announced that they believe they’ve found an actual Higgs boson, the theoretical subatomic particle that is the building block of the physical universe. It’s huge news for people who understand these sorts of things (the European Organization for Nuclear Research, or CERN, was behind the search and is now a virtual lock for a Nobel Peace Prize) but it’s still huge news even if you only have the faintest understanding of physics. Joe Incandela, the leader of the project, said that, “the preliminary results with the full 2012 data set are magnificent and to me it is clear that we are dealing with a Higgs boson, though we still have a long way to go to know what kind of Higgs boson it is.” For that, there will have to be more tests run with the $10 billion Large Hadron Collider, one of earth’s largest, coolest and most terrifying things …
