RELEVANT Recommends

With all the books, shows, movies and albums that come out every week, it can be hard to choose what's worth checking out and what's, well, not. At least, it used to be hard. But with RELEVANT Recommends, things are much easier. We give you a list of five things you should be watching, reading or listening to this week.

'Promised Land'

Why We Like It

You won't find a more likable cast (Matt Damon, Frances McDormand, John Krasinski) or a better-loved director (Gus Van Sant, of Good Will Hunting and Finding Forrester fame) in any film this month, or anytime soon.

'Downton Abbey'

Why We Like It

America finally gets to figure out what in the world has been going on. If you follow the series, you're waiting with bated breath. If you don't, you've already started to get the idea that you really should be.

'The Last Runaway'

Why We Like It

Tracy Chevalier made her mark with the phenomenal and well-loved Girl With a Pearl Earring. Her new novel follows a young Quaker's immigration to America and her dealings with the Underground Railroad against the backdrop of mid-1800s Ohio. In Chevalier's masterful hands, early America comes screaming to realest life.

'Portlandia'

Why We Like It

Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein's note-perfect skewering of hipster twentysomethings returns. If you're not watching, you're missing one of the sharpest, funniest, least-predictable things on television.

'56 Up'

Why We Like It

Michael Apted returns with the latest series in his spectacular, long-running project. In 1964, Apted gathered 14 children from all over England, made a documentary about their lives and has since gathered them together every seven years to make another documentary about them. The result is a sublime, fascinating examination of growing old. The latest entry catches the gang at 56 and is supposed to be one of the series' best.

Promised Land is partially funded by the United Arab of Emirates. The #1 competitor of the US when it comes to natural gas exports....coincidence? The world is against American energy independence. While the movie might be entertaining, the message is trash.
